The Exploratorium isn’t just a museum; it’s an ongoing exploration of science, art, and human perception—a vast collection of interactive exhibits, activities, programs, and events that feed your curiosity.  Check out a few of our collections and programs:

MIND

Exploratorium MIND

Explore your own thoughts, feelings, and perceptions as you journey through the Mind collection. More than 40 interactive exhibits and experiments will engage with your own cognitive process and emotional experiences, in provocative and unexpected ways.

Feel the tension between reason and emotion at a water fountain fashioned from a very real — but unused — toilet at A Sip of Conflict. See how well you can read emotions at The Eyes Have It, and how others see you — but you’ve never seen yourself at Startle Response.

SEEING

Can a guy in a Superman suit walk right in front of you—and you not see him? The answer is yes, shocking proof that we don’t all see the same thing when looking at the same scene, and that we can’t always believe what we do see.

Colored circles on a piece of paper appear to slide on the page at Dancing Dots. Check out how easily objects can blend into their backgrounds — until they move — at Disappearing Act.

TRAITS OF LIFE

Exploratorium Traits of Life

Deep down, we’re all alike. We all reproduce, use energy, and change over time. And we’re all made of cells, genes and DNA. More than 30 exhibits and demonstrations bring these themes to together in four different sections: The Stuff of Life, Life Needs Energy, Making More Life, and Change Over Time.

See plants “exhale” oxygen, tiny nematodes light up with sea jelly genes, and witness the breathtaking moment of fertilization when sperm meets egg at the Sea Urchin Fertilization Demo.

LISTEN: MAKING SENSE OF SOUND

Exploratorium Listen: Making Sense of Sound

Musical elements such as pitch, harmony, timbre, rhythm — and physical concepts such as frequency and resonance are fascinating to experience.

Eavesdropping: Relax in a salon chair while eavesdropping on conversations played through your hairdryer. Listen to three conversations at once – in a restaurant, at a salon, and in a classroom – while considering which ones pull you in and why.

Take a fantastic voyage through the middle and inner ear.
