The San Francisco Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and represents a uniquely successful partnership between the City of San Francisco and the San Francisco Zoological Society.
We designed the Zoo with the underlying belief that interaction and activity lead to conservation action.
We hope that caring for specific animals will inspire people to care for all wildlife and that this is the first step in the journey to becoming a conservationist.
Despite the many reasons that draw people here, we know that once they arrive, they will inevitably fall in love with wildlife, and that upon their departure from the Zoo they will begin their journey to become conservationists. We hope that you too will join us on this journey.
Spend a Saturday helping beautify the Zoo by volunteering for Renew the Zoo. Visit our native gardens – at the east end of the Lion house and in the Fisher Family Children’s Zoo in front of the Meerkat and Prairie Dog exhibit – for ideas for your own garden. Then, ask an expert at your local garden center about the kinds of native plants you can grow. Remember, native plants mean less work for you.
Join our weekly early childhood classes where you and your little one can connect with our animals. These pressure-free programs are a great introduction to the classroom environment. It’s fun and educational for both of you! Facts, crafts, music, and live animal visitors are just some of the exciting activities in store for you and your child every week. Join us for just one or two classes, or an entire 6 week series. Highlighted animals are different throughout the entire year.
